The Heartbreaking Ending of Tan Man Neelo Neel

When Hum TV's drama "Tan Man Neelo Neel" first aired, it seemed like a light-hearted comedy. The title song, the feel, and the young artists in the drama gave off the vibe that maybe we're in for a fun-filled love story. Little did we know that it was much more than that. As the drama progressed it surpassed all our expectations. It touched on one sensitive topic after another, ending abruptly on yet another piercingly sensitive topic: mob lynching and blasphemy.

As the photos of Mashal Khan, Muneeb, Mughees, Priyantha Kumara and others were shown, the viewers couldn't help but associate the colourful lives and dreams of Raabi, Sonu and Moon to those we've lost in mob lynching over the years. The last few minutes of the final episode took a piece of our hearts and minds forever. That's the power of storytelling and the triumph of art.

So what do these lines mean? Neel means blue, and it also means a bruise. "Main Neel Karayan Neelkan, Mera Tan Man Neelo Neel" has roots in Punjabi culture where a woman would wear blue-coloured thread as an earring when engaged to her beloved. So it is like saying, "I got blued so now my heart and body are all blue", expressing how love is binding; how it conquers one's heart and soul. But let's not forget the other meaning of Neel, and how love can leave your heart and body black and blue. This meaning is spiritual and hints toward devotional ecstasy.

In the context of the drama, both meanings apply. We saw how the characters of this story stood for each other and let love win, and we saw how blind love and faith can lead to violence and bloodshed. Blasphemy allegations in Pakistan represent such savage love-infused zealotry that has taken several innocent lives and persecuted countless others.
